When is the best time to go beach detecting?

Post by tcawood » Wed May 15, 2019 8:02 pm

I'm in Whitby, planning on detecting tomorrow but I've never beach detected before... So when is the best time of day for beach detecting?

Tx in advance

Just looked at tide times for Whitby tomorrow. Low tide 9.00 hrs next one 21.50hrs.
Odd timed to fit in with but you do have 3 hours either side, going out and coming in, when there should be enough beach to detect.
Try not to get in amongst the visitors, they don’t seem to like you detecting around the edges of their beach towels for some reason x;
As said above look out for dips and depressions in the sand also pebbly areas. If you get there early enough ask around, see if you can find out where the Ice Cream van parks. The locals coiners will prob. already have been around it but worth a try.

Have fun, good luck ::g

Where you decide to dig usually dictates when you need to be there. Always difficult to decide where to detect on a beach that you don't know though.

Generally wet sand for jewellery and dry sand for coins but there is lots of crossover. Places where the sand scours down to rock, pebbles or clay can be good.

Best of luck

I always like to start beach detecting a couple of hours before low tide and follow it out, that way you have a chance of fresh targets.

It's worth noting the details in the tide tables as not all low tides are the same.

The low water mark on maps and charts is the datum for ship navigation that water depths are taken from.

In the tables, as well as the time it will also state a height. If for instance this is 1.5m then the tide will be 1.5 metres higher then the low tide marked on maps.

It doesn't always follow that the best finds will be found at lower depths only that it is likely to be less looked at. More importantly is finding the hard pack, if sandy use your spade, if it hits hard stuff within a couple of inches under sand it could be a good place to search.

You could stay on the beach to find modern coins but I prefer to look where people swim and unknowingly throw their jewelery about. Less finds overall but more interesting.

Lastly don't forget safety, best to buddy up, watch out for quicksands and don't get cut off by the incoming tide.
