Handlebar moustache thing

Found this on wheat stubble with a Deus last week, and am struggling to i.d. it. It looks a bit like the sort of thing you'd have on the end of a pole for opening high windows, but it was found quite near a Roman site, and the patina suggests it could be quite old - anyone got any suggestions?
