Snaphaunce pistol cock (ECW)

Post by GeorgeMK » Mon Jun 10, 2019 4:30 pm

My wife found this piece of rusted iron on the Metal Detectives Group dig in Oxfordshire last week, but we didn’t recognise it until we cleaned the mud off it today!

It is the cock from a snaphaunce pistol.

The snaphaunce was around from about 1550 until about 1680 then fell out of favour to the flintlock. It is possible that this piece came off an English Civil War era pistol.

Ye gods I thought that was the image after cleaning until I re-read your post =))

For an iron find, that was worth the digging ::g

I’ve managed to edit the photo order without losing the photos.

Well, hats off to you for even recognising it and finding a match.

Makes me wonder how many chunks of old iron we chuck in the hedge might have been something of interest.

Well found and a great ID.

Thats from a flintlock, what they call a ring neck cock. The head of the tumbler screw probably broke causing it to fall off. Is that a piece of sheet lead still between the jaws, and below the pistol balls in the photo? Sheet lead or a piece of leather was used to help the jaws grip the flint.
