ARCHI UK Maps still not working ? #FIXED

Post by Dave8472 » Wed Oct 16, 2019 11:00 am

Hi all, is anyone else having problems accessing the map with the find spots on ?

For about three days just as the map goes to open it go's to a Java Script error. in the error console it says "You must enable Billing on the Google Cloud Project at....."

I have tried e-mailing them and messaged on Facebook with no reply ;;z

I have also tried it on a few browsers including an iPad

Have they not paid their bill to Google ? :))

I have updated Java by the way

Thanks Dave ):=

I just logged to do a search - and it did the same to me. I went to open the map, and then I got the same error message.
Looks like they changed the ARCHI search and, I dare say, that there is a compatibility issue.
I've sent them an e-mail to let them know.

I first experienced the map error on Archi last week so I sent an email to Chris Kutler at Archi Uk on Thursday, and an email yesterday to Digital Documents. No response received at the present time.

There was another archaeology research website I was looking at some months ago that had map problems and that was something to do with Google Maps restricting free access.

Google have restricted free access to sites that "borrow" their resource.
Looks like Archi need to spend some of the subs, had a free ride for long enough it seems.

Still no change or correspondence from them, nothing on their web site either :-/

Probably worth avoiding if anyone was thinking of subscribing ;;z

I will stick with PAS search's now

I’ve just looked and the issue is still not fully resolved.
The Google map does not load correctly, see sample screenshot, but as it is now showing the location pins on a map again (albeit a map that is darkened) it is working sufficiently to allow research.

Thanks, yes it’s better than nothing, I did get a reply in the end from their Facebook page asking for more details, so at least they were aware in the end

Asking for more details? Can’t they see the problem? I’m amazed how some companies don’t check their own products ;;z

Well they didn’t reply to any of the three emails that I sent them, the first of which I sent on 10/10/2019 direct to Chris Kutler, the CEO of ARCHI UK.

Just a quick update ...

I've just received this e-mail from Chris Kutler at ARCHI.

Hi Nick,

Please accept my most sincere apologies for the delay replying but I have been away on a survey and did not have access to the ARCHI system.

I have now looked at the issue and located and fixed the bug which was causing the problem.

If the error does surface again I would be grateful if you give me an example of the search terms you are using and I will repeat your search and trace the source of any errors.

Btw, the webpage to search from is:

https://www.archiuk.com/search

Best wishes and thank you for your patience in this matter.

Chris
ARCHI - The Archaeological and Historical Sites Index

I don't have suitable access to the system at the moment, but maybe other Forum Members will check to see if the search is working again

Regards.

Hi daveb
I’m not sure if this problem has been resolved for you and the other folks that have posted replies , but I thought I would let you know how I got the situation resolved as I had same problem.
There is a contact sub menu and I emailed them regarding this issue , after the third email , a chap called Chris got in touch, he explained that he had been away and, that after getting my email, and probably a few others, he had rectified the problem.
As much as it was frustrating, true to his word he sorted it out . Not sure if the maps are working for you now, but it’s working fine for me now .
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner but I to have been away and only just seen this article.
Thanks
Steve

Does anyone pay for the upgrade? Is it worth it? Does it show you any sites on your permissions etc?

Not sure what you mean by upgrade ? It’s an annual subscription. It’s OK like anything like this it has some errors and some good info. The main issue I see is people look at the points highlighted but don’t look at the grid accuracy, some of them are only 4 digits, that’s quiet a large area. It gives more of a flavour to a specific area.

For me it was a club subscription from club funds. Not sure I would pay it as an individual, depends how many places you detect really, as I go all over the place with several groups I do find it handy.

It can be just as easy to search PAS by grid reference and parish to also get some data, which is free.
