Just for a change a Roman for Allectus

Post by fred » Fri May 11, 2018 4:53 pm

This morning I and my detecting partner were back to swinging the Noxes on a pasture permission. As usual signals were plentiful but quality was mostly sorely lacking. I got one or two interesting items which pleased me but don't read too much into that as I am very easily pleased. :D The location and weather made up for any shortfall in finds.

This Antonianus of Allectus was my one and only coin of the day and gave an unmissable signal from about 8 inches down. It has a cracking portrait and needless to say I am well pleased with it. ::g

Ah right. I only asked as the obverse looks a bit crude but then that might be down to the way the image has come out and the minimal cleaning (which I personally like).

Thanks ::g

I think 3rdC barbarous radiates tend to be copies of coins of Divus Claudius II and Tetricus Senior and Junior. Allectus was a couple of decades later and any roughness in style or execution probably just reflects the turbulent times he lived in. :D
