Celtic plus Roman on a club dig. One for Oxgirl and bargeman too!

Post by fred » Sun May 13, 2018 6:31 pm

On Sundays we normally have a club dig, at least when I pull my finger out and organise one. :D While I was sorting one out last week the farmer mentionned that there was some old horse paddocks available if we wanted to give them a try. These had been paddocks for as long as I could remember and I wasn't even aware that he owned them but I gratefully accepted.

The grass was a bit too long in places but there was more than enough land for the dozen or so people who braved the dire weather forecast and early morning rain to turn up. It actually turned into a glorious sunny day although the finds had to be worked hard for. A badly eaten away large Roman bronze and a few other odds and sods kept me enthused and at least three hammies came up for others. The very last of these was a Commonwealth half groat from the final signal of the day of a good friend of mine so I was content that it had been a successful dig.

Myself and my regular detecting partner soldiered on alone for another hour and a half or so and my first signal of any note during this period was part of a small Roman brooch. A short while later I happened across a fairly rough Celtic Potin. Not sure exactly what type it is but probably Cantii and anyway it made a nice change from the Thurrock ones that turn up pretty regularly in Kent. After another hour with only a Viccy farthing and junk to show for it my final signal of the day was another Celtic potin of the same type in much better nick, it was even shiny in places.

All in all a good day and the Nox performed well again, although I am now getting bored with finding air rifle pellets everywhere. ::g

Nice days collection there Fred!

I’m assuming the potin was the item you were thinking of for me. It might be rough but I’d give up 10 Roman brooches for one of those. Bargeman can have the brooch all to himself :D

It turned out to be a good field then Fred. 2 potins in a day isn't too bad!
I see Kate had a few nice bits too.

2 reasonable club digs on the trot and 3 Celtic and a good Roman in a week! Must be doing something right. ::g

I always enjoy our club digs, especially when good stuff turns up, but organising them can be a bit fraught! :D

Morning Fred
Have you given up with CTX all together or just a new challenge. How do you find the equinox compared to the CTX Was think of purchasing equinox for a bit more speed on group digs as find the CTX slow on digs the Deus users have covered all the fields and are back at the car I’m still in the first field .
Cheers
