Just started, myself - ended up, after many, many weeks of deliberation, busting the bank and going for the XP Deus.
Light, accurate and fully programmable depending on circumstances and preference.
Sounds like you may well be looking towards woodland searching (On the assumption that you manage to get the permissions!) - some dont like the woodland searches due to the tangle factor and layers of old leaves, etc. I reckon that this means more virgin ground for the persistent detectorist.
Plenty of good advice and in-depth knowledge on these boards, and as yet, despite my efforts to prove my ignorance, I have never been accused of the "daft question" syndrome, so ask away if you need advice......

I say go for it-the bird life when your detecting is everywhere.
Just imagine what you’ve already walked over
