Completely new to this, no gear, know nothing.
The fantasy: Strolling around the countryside, fresh air, nice views, gentle exercise, occasionally finding interesting things/treasure

The reality: Permissions, permissions, permissions, you need permissions for that last bit.
My plan:
So, since I have no permissions and no knowledge, and there doesn't seem to be any local clubs, a good way to start might be beaches. It seems that they are the easiest places to get permissions. I can learn the ropes there, and see if I like it.
Ah, it seems you don't need a permit to detect on crown estate beaches, jolly good :-)
OK, so now I'm going to go off and research entry level detectors that will work on beaches, and them scoopy things so you don't have to bend over.
So if there's anyone in the Leeds area that wants to share petrol on trips out to the east coast get in touch.
Cheers
