Welcome the forum and this great hobby. You'll have great fun but be prepared to get sucked into all the research and the stuff you start to learn about everything from buckles to coins. Very quickly you'll start to wish you'd listened harder in history lessons - or is that just me
?
Look forward to seeing your future posts

Re: Hi all first timer from Buckinghamshire
Hello 'Simonwwfc26'
Welcome aboard the forum and believe me, 46 isn't late in life!
Your choice of machine, the Garrett 400i I have no personal experience of but I do know that Garrett have been making detectors since Pontius was a pilot! I also know they make quality, well built and capable machines which have the biggest following of any maker world wide. Although you say it will do for starters, I promise you, it will be as productive as any other machine operating under the same search conditions.
As a newcomer to the hobby this is the enjoyable bit, getting to grips with it's operating characteristic to gain confidence and discover it's foibles (all detectors have them in one form or another) and then, armed with new knowledge and a permission to search, we will look forward to hearing of your journey of considerable success (along with the odd failure/disappointment which is to be expected somewhere along the line! - another inevitable feature of this great hobby!!
Here's wishing you well and as advice goes, don't be in too much of a hurry to 'upgrade' because it's my view, that the best machine for the job is always the one your currently swinging
All the very best.
Regards ss47

Hi Simon,
Welcome to the hobby and Forum. Have been using the 400i for a year and am happy with what it does. As SS47 says it`s taking time to learn your machine, trying different settings etc. There are a few people on here using the 400i , so if you have any questions about it, don`t hesitate to ask.
Good luck with the hobby, you will soon become addicted, especially when you start trying to identify finds.
Cheers
Dave.

Re: Hi all first timer from Buckinghamshire
Simon
The internet is your best starting tutor. YouTube has brilliant starter videos providing tips and techniques to avoid the frustration of the embarrassing mistakes. Setting up machines incorrectly is not unusual and switching on near the car has, I suspect, been done by a lot more of us than we'd admit to
To meet up with fellow detectorists post in 'find a buddy' section. If you decide to go to an organised dig (one where you pay to do a days detecting) consider writing a post to meet up with others there. Lots of people don't want to meet up 1:1 unless they've already met you in a less formal setting.
Good luck
