Stainless steel shaft/handle wanted for sand scoop

Post by ajb6864 » Sat May 04, 2019 8:37 pm

Hi all

I'm after a good quality stainless steel shaft/handle for my existing sand scoop as the wooden one is on it's last legs!

If anyone could point me in the direction of a new or used one that they recommend, it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Alan

I am pretty sure Evolution do them ( reach them via the MDF shop) although they are not cheap and I would imagine they would make the sand scoop pretty heavy also.

Another alternative would be marine grade aluminium tube although I am not too sure how easy that is to get hold of...

Hi Alan,

Just be aware that they weigh nearly 3lb...add the weight of the sandscoop itself, and you are looking at a fairly heavy bit of kit...

If the weight and the expense of a Long Stainless Steel handle seems a bit over the top or not essential for the job in hand, you can use aluminium tubing of a an appropriate size/strength and insert a length of dowel similar to a long brush handle which will give the desired amount of internal strength and support to prevent the handle from buckling under the weight and pressure present when levering-up scoops full of wet sand.

Good luck whatever your choice ::g Regards ss47 ::g

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I had a fairly hefty wooden pole before, so not sure that there would be that much difference in weight and I need the exercise to be honest!

I'll have another look around for alternatives though, as I hadn't considered a carbon shaft before. Also I'll try and see if I can source a fibreglass shaft to experiment with, as I haven't managed to damage the one one my roughneck spade, despite all the abuse it gets.

Many thanks again all.

Alan
