Garrett 250 with Nell coil on wet sand.

Post by Pilgrimrob » Fri Aug 09, 2019 7:53 pm

Hi everyone. I have just bought a second hand 250 and was reading about the problems this machine has on wet sand. Just a thought but would fitting the Nell coil make a difference on wet sand or is the coil not the problem. As I said I am a novice at this so please excuse me if it’s a stupid question. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Pilgrimkrob, The answer is no, the coil will make no difference as many VLF?TR detectors are adversely affected by the saltwater soaked mineral content of sand. Your machine, which is a popular choice for general detecting, will operate fine on the dry sand.
Good Luck - Regards ss47 ::g

Thanks ss47 for the reply. Think I will just us the 250 as it came out of the box and maybe upgrade the coil in the future when I can appreciate what the difference is between the two. Thanks again.

I have the 250 NEL tornado combo and yes it is useless on wet sand. On land it is a good pairing to use especially for good ground cover. If you do upgrade always take the standard coil with you as backup or for areas where the tornado is too big for eg scrub. :;@

As a general rule it not a great beach detector. However not all beaches are the same. Its always worth a quick try on your beach. Very flat even sand with no ripples are often doable with a very slow swing and reduced sensitivity.

Also with these compromised detectors a small DD coils often work slightly better but you will never turn it into a beach detector.

Its important to keep the swing the same high above the ground.

Hi,yes unfortunately your Ace 250 will never give you success on wet salty muddy sand.
As a once owner of an Ace 250 I too had to realise that wet beach was a big no no.
But,on the plus side I did have success on detecting on the dry beach.
Don't bother spending out on a new coil..learn the tones on the 250,it will certainly tell you what lies beneath.
Just as a "by the way"...if your ever interested in a good all rounder entry level detector..take a look at the Makro RACER(red)....I had a couple of those and these machines are very,very good on both beach and land.
Also,they are now very reasonably priced,
probably around the £200:00....£300:00 ish !!
Anyway,good hunting,and I look forward to seeing all your notable finds on the forum ::g
