Do not hold much hope

Post by Curtains dave » Sun Nov 10, 2019 8:19 pm

Found this little coin that I think maybe Roman. If it is it predates my earlier finds by hundreds of years. Interested to see if this site has some Roman history.

Found on pasture with my trusty deus.

Certainly looks Roman. Some that I have found in this condition benefit from a gentle rub with fine wire wool. That has often helped with revealing detail for me.
Don't zap it though as the surface will probably fall to pieces.

It's either a farthing or a Roman and it looks more Roman. :D

I think Widgeons very helpful tip has annoyingly revealed Britannia.
Or am I seeing things?

If it is a farthing I reckon it’s George 1st.

Any other ideas.

Dump farthings are the only ones with the characteristic flan outside the main design so you are probably right. :D

Still looks Roman to me. There are lots of reverse images on Roman coins that have a figure featured.
Give it another rub and see what comes up ::g .
